Top tips on how to promote your company’s social commitment which don't cost the world

2020 has certainly been a very different year so far, and it's only June.

A lot of things are never going to be the same after this year.

But there is one thing which will remain the same for now, for the future, and that’s the importance of a company's social commitment to the world.

Whether you’re an employee, a manager, a founder or CEO, this commitment applies and affects everyone in a workplace.

Social commitment is simply having a social responsibility to cause the least amount of damage as possible around you.

No, I don’t mean you should go to the Amazon rainforest and plant some trees as part of a corporate trip.

I am sure you are all much busier than this and that is completely understandable, not to mention the huge increase in your carbon footprint!

However, nothing is stopping you from supporting, funding or running social initiatives which are linked to your company's core values.

That is step one.

You may not have a clear purpose-led strategy right now or support any sustainability initiatives. So, if you feel like you need some guidance on improving your company’s CSR strategy, then head over here to find out everything you need to know.

But now, let’s focus on step 2: promoting yourself.

This step is just as important as creating your purpose-led CSR strategy and does not have to cost a lot of money or time.

Firstly, let’s talk about whether it is really necessary to promote your purpose-led strategy? Does anyone really need to know this?

The answer to both these questions is yes. Employees’ clients, customers and consumers all benefit from knowing the initiatives you are supporting and in turn, this benefits your company. I will now explain all of this in detail.

Let’s start with the employees. The backbone of your business.

In the workplace, make sure each employee is fully aware of your CSR values. These should be linked to your product or brand and should have specific goals linked with them. For example, if you are a makeup brand which is against animal testing, and is making sure all packing includes at least 50% alternative or recycled plastic by 2021.

Make sure they are aware of your implicative communication and get them involved! Implicative communication is

When communication makes its contribution to this “other” world that we wish for. A world with a long-term future ~ Florence Touzé.

If you have funded a project to remove plastic from the ocean, throw your employees a small party with an ocean-themed cake and show them a video on the specific project’s benefits. Make sure they know your sustainability efforts are not just meaningless words but are being implemented in the world.

Advertise yourself around your office. Let them know what you are planning to do in the future, or what initiative you are currently supporting. Put up posters or banners, show videos in team meetings. These are really simple ways to spread the word without using much time or money.

Why is this important, you may be thinking? Surely employees aren’t necessarily interested in this?

My personal answer this is

Happiness + inspired employees = a stronger business.

But what about some facts to back this up?

Devin Thorpe, a champion of social good, interviewed various company’s discussing the benefits of CSR and he discovered that 51 out of 59 believe they have happier employees, and 45 out of 59 with better employees, such as from attracting better talent.

Therefore, promoting your sustainability efforts in a fun and engaging way really does not have to cost a lot but has many long-term benefits!

Now let’s discuss clients, customers and consumers. The 3 C’s.

I have put these in the same category because although they may engage with your business in different ways, none of them are likely to be interacting with you in the workplace. Therefore whilst your employees are now fully aware of your initiatives, the best way to communicate outside the office is through advertising campaigns.

I’m not just talking about regular, bland advertising. I’m speaking about using rich media software, planning the right execution and using your high-performing purpose-led marketing strategies for your implicative communication. This type of marketing can also be intertwined with your regular marketing campaigns.

This may seem complicated, but it’s actually super simple. If you use an interactive form of marketing, with the right technology to present your social or environmental initiatives and/or CSR values, you are doing everything right! ✔️

For example, creating a responsible marketing campaign which includes a QR code, including a video on your website or posting on social media about your initiatives and using ‘swipe up’ action.

These are super simple yet so effective.

You will also have full control over the campaign, spending as much time and money as you want to. Even the simplest campaign or promotion can have long-term benefits.

This also promotes your conscious capitalism, as it shows conscious leadership, care for the community and having a purpose beyond just making money.

Consumers, customers and clients respond positively to this as they know they are dealing with a responsible brand which cares about contributing towards a healthier world.
